Dear John,

Earlier this year we highlighted a pivotal case being argued before the Supreme Court, West Virginia v. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) — a lawsuit by coal companies and their allies that could put tight restrictions on EPA’s authority to address climate pollution from power plants.

The timing of when we will hear about the ruling is unclear.

The Court’s decision could be coming as soon as next week or a few weeks from now, and in the coming weeks as we wait, we want to connect you with the tools and resources necessary to understand what’s at stake, and how you can show your support for the EPA and its authority to protect public health and the environment.

Check out our Climate 411 blog post for a quick outline of the case and what’s at stake. [link removed]

The Supreme Court’s opinion could affect EPA’s authority to address dangerous climate pollution from the nation’s power plants and could have other far-reaching climate and public health consequences. If the Justices accept the most extreme arguments made by coal companies and their allies, it could undermine our nation’s ability to provide other core benefits and protections such as ensuring the safety of food and drugs, protecting workers’ rights, or policing financial fraud.

Impeding EPA’s ability to act will make it much harder to protect families and communities from the rising costs and mounting dangers of the climate crisis. It could stifle our ability to address climate pollution, by interfering with EPA’s explicit duty to regulate its biggest contributors.

We can’t let that happen.

As we await the Court’s ruling we must show that there is overwhelming public support for strong EPA action on climate pollution — and the first step is educating ourselves.
