I’m devastated. I’m sick. I’m furious.

The heartbroken community in Uvalde, TX will never be the same after the lives of 19 elementary-school children and 2 teachers were violently taken this week. The unspeakable tragedy of deadly attack after deadly attack on our fellow Americans will never ease until we know schools, grocery stores, churches, and theaters are safe from weapons of war.

Each time, we’ve seen the same reaction from my GOP colleagues: “thoughts and prayers” followed by inaction and obstruction. It is absolutely unconscionable that the GOP continues to block all gun safety legislation that would protect our children and communities.

Right now, Republican senators are holding up gun safety legislation that would expand background checks for all firearm sales and transfers, something 90% of Americans support. We are being held hostage. And here in Pennsylvania, the Republican gubernatorial nominee wants to make our gun laws exactly like those in Texas.

To put it frankly, Republicans care more about lining their pockets with money from the gun lobby than they do about innocent lives lost to preventable violence. We can’t allow ourselves to become numb to this, and we have to keep fighting.

This has been a hard month to be an American. In our grief and pain, I wanted to provide opportunities for action following Tuesday’s shooting.

VictimsFirst has organized a verified fundraiser for the families of victims in Uvalde. VictimsFirst was started by a network of victims' families and survivors to ensure 100% of contributions go directly to the victims' families and those injured. You can find the fundraiser here. A hub of verified fundraising efforts to support the Uvalde community, the victims’ families, and survivors can be found here.

Giffords: Courage to Fight Gun Violence shared two reports, both are helpful resources for understanding how we’ve gotten to this moment in our history, again.

We mourn the unthinkable losses of the families in Uvalde, Texas, in Buffalo, New York — and the trauma such shootings inflict upon children and parents everywhere — because the GOP caved to the gun lobby and failed to keep them safe.

I’m not going to give up until we pass the common sense gun violence prevention laws we deserve. It doesn’t have to be this way.
