It is a sad day in Texas. With people across our state and across our country, I am devastated by the loss of the 19 children and 2 teachers murdered with a weapon of war at Robb Elementary in Uvalde and heartbroken for their classmates, teachers, and families. And I am heartbroken for every American who, for themselves and their families, fears going to school, to the grocery store, to houses of worship — to the places of community and connection in our country.
We must turn our heartbreak into action. The majority of Americans support common-sense gun safety legislation, but too many elected leaders are ignoring the will of voters.
We must elect leaders — up and down the ballot, in Texas and across the country — who listen to and champion our priorities, including gun safety.
Before I was elected to Congress, I worked with local and national gun-safety groups and community members to advocate for data-driven policies to reduce gun violence, and I took that fight with me to the House where I have co-sponsored legislation requiring universal background checks, closing gun purchase loopholes, and banning assault weapons. Two of these have passed the House. It is time for the Senate to act on them. And for the House to do more.
And we must do more. We must keep fighting for common-sense policies to keep our communities safe.
We must keep fighting so that people at another school, another place of worship, another grocery store, another concert, or another place of community do not go through the agony our fellow Texans are enduring at this moment. All of our hearts are with them now, and we must make sure our actions are too.
Together, we can do anything,
