John,

I have genuinely struggled these past few days. Our hearts are broken for parents, and teachers, and faculty, and community members, and school children, who are living through every family's worst nightmare.

The pain that the Robb Elementary School community and that Uvalde, Texas is living through is perhaps incomprehensible for those of us who have children, but it is entirely predictable. It will happen again and again until we collectively decide to find a path forward to responsibly address it.

My children are the light of my life and even though they are living their lives as adults with families of their own, I sent them to school every day of their childhood with the certainty that I would see them again in the afternoon. It’s a certainty that every parent in the United States should have each day.

It is far past time to meet the moment with action. We in the Senate need to have a better answer. We have to make it harder for individuals to get access to weapons who have demonstrated the capacity, or the potential, to use them to harm themselves or their families. And we have to do more to address gun violence.

It is time to ensure that tragedies like this do not continue happening with astonishing, embarrassing, gut-wrenching regularity.

Thank you,

Chris Coons
