My name is Julissa Martinez and this is my last week as the digital intern for the Iowa Democratic Party.

Working with the Iowa Democrats has shown me how important it is to join the fight for a better future for every Iowan, no matter where we come from.

As a Mexican-American and first-generation college student at the University of Iowa, I’ve had a front-row seat to the issues my generation will inherit if we don’t make a change now.

My friends and I have been dealing with the fallout from our leaders' inaction on gun violence since we were children.

As the granddaughter of immigrants, I have seen the discrimination and difficulty that many new Americans face when they arrive in this country.

I’ve watched politicians and Supreme Court justices debate if I deserve the right to control my own future.

But the way things are right now isn’t the way they always have to be.
