Dear John —
It’s been a big week in Tallahassee for Florida’s Special Session on our state’s property insurance crisis, and I want to provide you with an update.
Florida has quickly become one of the least affordable states in the nation. That’s due in part to an ongoing homeowners insurance crisis coupled with a rapidly worsening housing affordability crisis and the skyrocketing cost of rent.
Tens of thousands of homeowners are having their policies cancelled. Companies are fleeing out of state. And Citizens Property Insurance – the state-backed insurer of last resort – is ballooning past reasonable viability.
I’ve been proud to lead Democrats in fighting for real relief and real change.
I’m also proud to have led negotiations to include condo safety provisions in this special session. This is a critical effort in the wake of the Surfside tragedy.
And I’ve been working to keep Floridians at the center of the conversation, to hold Republicans accountable. Homeowners need tangible relief both now and later — not partial solutions that don’t address the root of this problem.
