Hey John,
Normally, this email would be nothing but hope and joy. But it's hard to feel that way after the third mass shooting in recent days — Buffalo, Laguna Woods, and now Uvalde.
We mourn with the families and loved ones affected by these tragedies. These acts of senseless violence remind us once again of the need to transform grief and rage into collective action and change. America’s crisis of gun violence was caused in no small part by the inaction of our elected leaders. New elected leadership is one part of the desperately needed solution.
So we share these diverse young progressives with you out of determination. As much as we want them to, it seems unlikely that Congress will act. Right now, state and local officials HAVE to step up and do the work to keep us safe.
These 57 diverse young progressives have earned our endorsement because they are committed to ending gun violence, building safer communities, and fighting for our progressive values. Please get to know more about them.
Here's a little look at our May 2022 Endorsement Class by the numbers:
What are they fighting for?
=> 19% Running for education roles (school board, state board of education, etc)
=> 5% Running for legal positions (district attorney, judge, sheriff, etc)
=> 30% Running for municipal office (mayor, city council, county council, etc)
=> 46% Running for state legislature
How do they identify?
=> 67% people of color
=> 30% LGBTQIA+
=> 44% women
This class includes some truly unique folks including a candidate who teaches natural resources law, multiple children of immigrants, six teachers (including two who taught special ed), a registered nurse, and a hotel worker who organized a union with his coworkers.
