The foremost wish of all parents is for their kids to be alive, happy, and healthy. Friend,
Guns kill more American children than anything else.
Not illnesses. Not car accidents.
Guns.
Shootings happen so frequently that we can't even mourn the losses of one before
the next one occurs. Movie theaters, churches, synagogues, concerts, nightclubs,
grocery stores, schools -- they've all become sites of horrific violence in
America.
I've implored my Republican colleagues to imagine the devastation they would
feel if someone they loved were the victim of a massacre like the one that
happened in Texas yesterday or California the week before or Buffalo the day
before that.
It seems they cannot.
Republicans have tried to portray themselves as the party that puts parents
first. And the foremost wish of all parents is for their kids to be alive,
happy, and healthy -- not haunted by fear and anxiety. Not mourning the loss of
their friends or teachers. And certainly not the victim of a mass shooting at
their school.
So I ask once more: Is it really so hardto stand up to the NRA and vote for simple measures that would make these
massacres less likely?
The Senate will vote on legislation to prevent gun violence, starting tomorrow
with a bill to enable federal law enforcement to prevent acts of domestic
terrorism. And I'm imploring Senate Republicans to come to the table and work
with us to craft legislation to stop these massacres. No one bill will
completely solve our epidemic of gun violence, but any bill would be a step in
the right direction.
We will see if Republicans will join us.
