I am struggling to find the words, John.

There is nothing I can type that can convey the sympathy I have for those impacted by the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas yesterday – for the parents who sent their children to school, unaware it would be the last time they saw them alive.

My heart is broken for their families, and for the families of the teachers. But let me be clear: Now is not the time for empty thoughts and prayers – we need action. This is the deadliest school shooting since Sandy Hook, ten years ago. And we’ve yet to see meaningful change in the time since.

This type of violence has become the norm, but we cannot allow ourselves to be numb to it. It is past time we have comprehensive gun reform legislation, and we cannot wait another moment to address this issue.

I sincerely hope our elected leaders will act with the urgency this moment requires and pass legislation to protect our communities from the plague of gun violence in America. And when I get to Congress, I will always be a vote for gun violence prevention. I will stand firmly against the gun lobby and the politicians they fund in the fight to keep us safe.

John, today is hard and heavy – I hope you take some time to rest and enjoy moments with your loved ones. But tomorrow, I will still be in this fight and I hope you’ll join me.

Warmly,

Emilia
