Spotlight

This week — just 10 days after the white supremacist massacre in Buffalo — we had another horrific mass shooting, at an elementary school in Texas. A once unimaginable tragedy has happened yet again, as far-right elected officials in Congress and across the country continue to stand in the way of commonsense gun reform laws – but our anger over their inaction will not turn to despair. While we grieve the tragic and avoidable loss of life, we will continue mobilizing to hold each one of them accountable for their failure to act by supporting candidates that will.

The mass shooting in Buffalo has drawn attention to the “Great Replacement Theory,” a theory boosted by the Far Right and its allies at Fox News and some conservative media. Tragically, the GOP is becoming a party whose modern legacy is being defined by violent white supremacists. If we are ever going to stop this sort of home-grown white supremacist terrorism, it is going to take all of our leaders doing everything they can.

Help Us Defeat the Extremists and Expand Majorities for Progressive Change this Fall

If you’re feeling like America is at a crossroads right now, you’re not alone. One fork in the road leads to a future America that conservatives have openly declared they would like to resemble Hungary – a proto-fascist, authoritarian state ruled by white supremacists and unconstrained by an independent media, democratic institutions or racial diversity.

The other fork leads to the America WE believe in – a democratic society that implements the ideals of freedom, equality, opportunity and justice for all.

The midterm elections this fall present a turning point for the survival of our democracy and our hard-won rights, so we need to be as strong as possible to continue the fight. People For is leading the way to empower progressives across the country and defeat far-right extremists up and down the ballot, but we can only do this necessary work with financial support from members like you. Please renew your People For membership today to help us accomplish this mission. >>

Things are about to get worse for millions of vulnerable people in our country.

The far right-wing majority on the U.S. Supreme Court is getting ready to reverse Roe v. Wade, the 50-year-old ruling that recognized a pregnant person’s right to have an abortion. Abortion is legal today, but pretty soon that could no longer be the case in most of the country.

The far-right Supreme Court majority has issued yet another ruling undermining efforts to address corrupt dealings through campaign contributions. This time, the Court has given special interests an opening to enrich the personal wealth of elected officials.

This week, the Senate Judiciary Committee will hold their markup vote for one of President Biden’s latest judicial nominees: Nancy Abudu, a legal scholar who has fought for years to protect the rights of the underprivileged and has been nominated to serve on the Eleventh Circuit. Watch our latest video featuring People For board member Rabbi David Saperstein promoting Abudu’s nomination and then sign (and share!) our petition calling on the Senate to confirm her.

It’s a not-infrequent situation where a federal judge has some type of personal or financial conflicting interest in a case that’s been brought before them. The ethics codes that govern the U.S. judicial system will typically require those judges to recuse themselves from the case in order to preserve impartiality. Not so for the Supreme Court. Earlier this month, the Senate Judiciary Committee took up this exact issue when they evaluated whether to pass legislation that would create a strict code of ethics that would apply to Supreme Court justices.
