I am heartbroken to hear of yet another act of senseless violence in our nation. Hearts across the country are with the people of Uvalde, Texas in the wake of yesterday’s shooting, and I am praying for the victims, their families, and the communities suffering the physical and emotional wounds of this horrific act.

The fact is, every shooting is preventable, and every death is a reminder that this violence could be curbed with the stroke of a pen. It doesn’t have to be this way, and those that stand in the way of this public health crisis are complicit.

Throughout my career, and especially as Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, I have always fought for stricter gun laws, and I won’t stop now. We have tried to pass sweeping gun control reform in the past, though many of my colleagues in Congress remain complicit with this madness.

Republicans in Congress and across the country are more concerned about keeping gun lobbyists and the NRA happy than they are about protecting children’s lives, and I’m sick of it. Even some of my colleagues who call themselves Democrats repeatedly fail to take any action to prevent tragic brutality. “Democrats” like Senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema consistently back down in the face of pressure from special interests, and with lives at stake, the time for tolerating their political games has long passed.

I will never allow myself to be bullied by special interests. And I will never stop fighting to take actionable steps to prevent gun violence.
