John,
All this month, we’ve been hammering the point that we MUST expand our Senate majority to have any hope of saving democracy and getting our country back on track after the Trump years.
For most of the month, we’ve been focused on saving Roe v. Wade from being overturned by the Trump-stacked Supreme Court – we even set an ambitious goal of raising a million dollars in May to do it.
But yesterday’s massacre in Uvalde, Texas reminds us of yet another reason we MUST expand our Senate majority: It’s the only way we’re EVER going to pass meaningful gun safety reform legislation.
We told you last night that the NRA and other 2 nd Amendment extremist groups usually see a massive boost in donations following school shootings, as much as triple their usual intake.
We don’t expect this shooting to be any different; in fact, we have evidence they’re already using this tragedy to convince their supporters that the government is coming to take away their guns:

Meanwhile, folks like us who actually WANT common-sense gun reform are sitting here feeling enraged, frustrated, and helpless, because we know the odds are good that just like every other time this horror has happened, nothing is going to change.
Well, enough is enough of feeling helpless. It’s time for us to borrow a page from the gun lobby’s playbook and TAKE ACTION NOW to make sure we CAN change things after this year’s midterms.
Action can take a lot of forms: You can call your local Democratic Party or campaign headquarters and volunteer. You can register people to vote and become a poll watcher. You can engage in online activism. You can call and put pressure on your elected officials. We hope you’ll do all of the above! We sure are.
But effective action on a national scale also requires money – and lots of it. That’s something the NRA has always understood. That’s why they’ve spent millions and millions of dollars to get the Republican Party in their pocket – and it’s why you and I have got to counter their insane political spending with a campaign war chest of our own.

For perspective, here’s just a small sampling of the kind of campaign cash the NRA has been throwing at Republicans:

And here’s a look at how the gun lobby has been outspending gun reform groups:

It’s time we got serious about doing what it takes to compete – and that means raising a hell of a lot more money to give to candidates who will do what it takes to END the filibuster, pass meaningful gun safety reform, save Roe v. Wade and our other fundamental civil rights, and defend democracy.

This weekend, the NRA will have their big yearly conference in Houston, just a couple hundred miles away from the scene of the Uvalde massacre.
While they shop for new weapons, flood the political fund with donations, and listen to speeches by Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, and Texas Governor Greg Abbott, 21 families will be mourning and burying their dead children and other loved ones.
(It’s worth noting that members won’t be allowed to bring their guns to the keynote speeches. The NRA is all in favor of protecting its handpicked politicians from the risks presented by deadly weapons, but not fourth graders in an elementary school classroom.)
We hear folks in the area plan to protest the convention, and we’re all for it. But for the rest of us, the very best thing we can do right now is give, give, give to, and work, work, work for politicians who will DO SOMETHING to end gun violence in this country.

Remember, only by expanding our Senate majority can we effect real change and stop this senseless violence.
Thanks for everything you’re doing to help save our democracy.

P.S. If you can’t afford a big donation right now, consider making a small monthly commitment to our work instead – even just $5 or $10 a month makes a huge difference to our ability to plan and execute new programs and support additional candidates.
