John,

At some point we have to come together and declare: Enough is enough!

I would have thought that moment would have been twenty-three years ago, in the aftermath of the shooting at Columbine. After the devastating tragedy at Sandy Hook ten years ago, if you had told me that we'd be here yet again in 2022, mourning something so preventable, I wouldn't have believed it.

But yet again, my heart breaks knowing that the community in Uvalde must deal with the loss of their children and teachers in the wake of another senseless act of gun violence. We can't continue to live like this, and we must do more to protect our schools and communities.

Our children deserve to learn in a place where they can find sanctuary and feel safe. Our teachers deserve the comfort and peace of a workplace where they can teach the next generation without the fear of losing their lives or their children.

Thoughts and prayers are not enough. Our country has normalized seeing shooting after shooting and that is not ok. Just this year, there have been twenty-seven instances of gun violence in schools and we're not even half-way through 2022. I'm here to say that we can't allow ourselves to become numb to this violence, now is the moment to do something and finally take action.

As we honor the memories of those lost at Robb Elementary and reflect on their lives, we must also find it within ourselves to commit to action and fight for common-sense gun laws. We have to take action to ban assault rifles and high capacity magazines, and we need universal background checks now. I have sponsored and fought for this legislation for years and will not be silenced.

It is my hope that in the spirit of love and justice, we can find a world where school shootings are a memory of the distant past - but that requires our collective action.

Thank you,

Diana DeGette
