John —
Last night at the ballot box was a resounding victory for our gun safety movement, but the win felt hollow after yesterday's tragic shooting in Uvalde, Texas.
In the four years since Parkland, 10 years since Sandy Hook, and 23 years since Columbine, our federal government has done almost nothing to prevent this same tragedy from happening over and over and over again. It is a uniquely American problem. This doesn't happen anywhere else in the world. Only in America does every parent have to teach their children what an "active shooter drill" is. Only in America will thousands of children and parents live forever with the trauma that a person with a gun shot up their school, or their church, or their supermarket.
Make no mistake, John, if my Republican colleagues in the Senate wanted to, they could begin to fix this and pass the common-sense gun safety reforms we have voted on in the House.
And about yesterday's election victory: I want to thank all of you reading this email, all of you who donated your time and money – and everyone who has supported my campaigns for Congress since 2018 and the gun safety advocacy work I've been doing since my son Jordan was shot and killed in 2012.
You sent this Mom on a Mission back to Congress after Georgia Republicans tried to use redistricting to get rid of me. And all of us, together, must continue this work to pass common-sense gun safety reforms in Washington, in Georgia, and in all of our communities to keep our families safe.
With love,
-- Lucy
