Last week I testified during a U.S. House Judiciary Committee hearing on clemency. I told the committee members about how I was denied clemency even though my application received widespread support from civil rights leaders, conservatives, and progressives – among many others – and despite having no infractions during my 33 years in prison. But the First Step Act of 2018 gave me a chance to come home and since then I’ve fought for second chances for others.

I told the committee members that I am not unique. There are many men and women in prison who deserve to come home and who could make a difference in their communities. That’s why I urged the committee to pass the First Step Implementation Act (S.1014) and The Covid-19 Safer Detention Act (S.312).

The First Step Implementation Act and The Covid-19 Safer Detention Act, would bring many people home by expanding eligibility for compassionate release to the oldest people in federal prisons and applying retroactive sentencing reforms enacted under the First Step Act. Both of these bills are bipartisan, compassionate, and sensible reforms. 

Please join me in urging Congress to support second chances for people serving extreme sentences in federal prisons by taking action now.
