Shooting at Texas Middle School Claims Lives of at least 19 Children, 2 Adults

ABC: The 18-year-old suspect, a student at Uvalde High School, is also dead, Gov. Greg Abbott said. Abbott said the suspect “shot and killed horrifically and incomprehensibly” more than a dozen students and a teacher. The suspect also allegedly shot and killed his grandmother before entering the school and again opening fire (ABC). It did not take President Biden long to politicize the tragedy (Twitter). Katie Pavlich: During his remarks, Biden didn’t use the time to honor the victims and their families. Instead, he rehashed old jokes about deer wearing kevlar and ranted while reading the teleprompter. He also claimed it was time for Congress to “do something,” but did not say what specific law would have prevented the killer from carrying out his heinous crimes. He blamed the situation on “the gun lobby” (Townhall). Nicholas Fondacaro: In the wake of the school shooting in Texas, former DHS officials turned CNN flack Juliette Kayyem demands Biden suspend immigration enforcement in the area of Uvalde “because of the political issues in Texas” (Twitter).

Glenn Greenwald: Sarah Huckabee Sanders poised to smash the glass ceiling, becoming the first woman elected governor in Arkansas’ history (Twitter). Fox News: Boozman, who also received Trump’s endorsement, saw widespread support throughout the state during his campaign for another term. However, he was also met with a backlash among those who were not pleased that he did not support overturning the 2020 election results (Fox News). Sanders raised $14 million on her way to trouncing Doc Washburn by 65 points (New York Times).

Indiana House, Senate Override Governor’s Veto of Bill Protecting Women’s Sports

Daily Wire: The GOP-led Indiana House of Representatives and Senate voted to override Republican Gov. Eric Holcomb’s veto of a bill banning biological males from competing in girls’ sports. The House voted 67-28 early Tuesday. The state’s Senate voted in favor of the override 32-15 to overwhelmingly defeat the governor’s veto (Daily Wire). WRTV: In a letter to House Speaker Todd Huston, R-Fishers, Holcomb said the bill leaves too many unanswered questions for him to support the bill “even if I support the overall goal.” He said the presumption of the policy laid out in HEA 1041 is there is an “existing problem” requiring state intervention. He also pointed to a number of potential issues, including frustration among students, parents and administrators, lawsuits and lawsuits filed or threatened to have been filed in other states after similar legislation was passed (WRTV).

FBI Uncovers ISIS Plot to Assassinate President George W. Bush

Co-conspirators had planned to bring the terrorist across the Southern border. Forbes: An Iraqi man in the U.S. accused of being linked to ISIS operatives was plotting to kill George W. Bush, going so far as to travel to Dallas in November to take video around the former president’s home and recruiting a team of compatriots he hoped to smuggle into the country over the Mexican border, according to an FBI search-warrant application filed March 23 and unsealed this week in the Southern District of Ohio. The FBI said it uncovered the scheme through the work of two confidential informants and surveillance of the alleged plotter’s account on the Meta-owned WhatsApp messaging platform. The suspect, Shihab Ahmed Shihab Shihab, based in Columbus, Ohio, said he wanted to assassinate Bush because he felt the former president was responsible for killing many Iraqis and breaking apart the country after the 2003 U.S. military invasion, according to the warrant (Forbes). NBC: Shihab has been charged with aiding and abetting the attempted murder of a former federal official in retaliation for the performance of official duties, and attempting to bring a foreigner to the U.S. for financial gain. Federal prosecutors are asking that Shihab be detained without bond, with a hearing set for Friday (NBC). Clay Travis: A plot to assassinate George W. Bush via bringing in terrorists across our undefended southern border has been uncovered (Twitter).

Texas School Boards Leave National Association of School Boards Over “Domestic Terrorism”

Texas Tribune: The Texas Association of School Boards, the state group representing the state’s 1,024 public school boards, has severed its ties with the National School Boards Association. The move came late Monday night, three days after an independent investigation revealed the national body contacted the Biden administration weeks before it sent a letter last fall in which it requested federal assistance at school board meetings. That investigation showed that the NSBA had planned to ask for the National Guard and the military to be sent to school board meetings. But that request never made it into the final letter that NSBA officials sent on Sept. 29 to the White House. In the letter’s final version, the national group asked Biden officials to investigate threats against school board members by people who attend school board meetings as “domestic terrorism,” prompting immediate criticism from Republicans (Texas Tribune). Daily Wire: The TASB represents more than 5.4 million students across Texas, making it one of the largest school board associations in the nation. The decision makes Texas one of 30 states that have “distanced” themselves from the association in recent months over a controversial letter sent to Attorney General Merrick Garland. Many have left the NSBA (Daily Wire).

Biden to Sign Police Reform Legislation Today

Wall Street Journal: President Biden on Wednesday will sign an executive order aimed at promoting police accountability, people familiar with the matter said, after facing setbacks in his push to overhaul law-enforcement practices. The wide-ranging order, to be signed on the second anniversary of the killing of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer while three others looked on, will require agencies to update their policies on how officers can use force and will create a registry of major disciplinary actions taken against officers, among other measures, the people said. While the order is binding only on federal agencies, it encourages state and local police to follow training standards and tighten restrictions on tactics such as chokeholds and no-knock warrants, the people said (Wall Street Journal). Fox News: President Biden has rebuffed calls from the progressive wing of his party to defund the police, while also calling for reforms in the wake of incidents involving deadly use of excessive force by officers (Fox News).

Bank of America Raises Minimum Wage to $22 Per Hour

Yahoo: Bank of America Corp said it was raising its U.S. minimum hourly wage to $22 on Monday, a step closer to its promise of paying workers $25 an hour by 2025. The second-largest U.S. bank by assets has been steadily raising its minimum hourly wage since 2017, when it was $15, and has been at the leading edge of banks raising base pay for hourly workers. Last year the bank pledged to pay its workers at least $25 an hour by 2025, the highest minimum wage of any big retail bank, and also began requiring its vendors to set a minimum wage of $15 an hour. This latest pay hike comes as inflation in the U.S. hovers at a 40-year high, raising prices for food, healthcare and rent, which, in March, hit the highest level since 2006 (Yahoo). CBS: Should BofA reach its wage target for 2025, its minimum hourly pay will have increased by nearly $14 — a jump of more than 121% since 2010, it said. BofA last year required its U.S. vendors pay their employees who work on the bank’s business at least $15 an hour (CBS).

Walmart Suspends Juneteenth Ice Cream After Social Media Backlash

Business Insider: Walmart is removing from shelves an ice-cream product that commemorated Juneteenth, a US holiday that marks the freedom of enslaved African Americans, reports said. Social media was abuzz with comments from users who were angered by the product, which featured a swirl of red velvet and cheesecake flavors. Many criticized the company for appearing to capitalize on the holiday and its history… Last year, President Joe Biden enacted a law to make Juneteenth, which takes place on June 19, a federal holiday. The holiday has been celebrated since the late 1800s and recognized in most US states. But the push to make it a federal holiday gained momentum following protests in response to George Floyd’s murder by a white police officer (Business Insider). Daily Wire: “We said we want the reparations we are owed. They gave us Representatives kneeling in Kente cloth, ice cream and party decorations,” said one user. Several other users complained that Walmart was selling its own brand of ice cream instead of promoting a similar flavor sold by a black-owned ice cream company (Daily Wire).
