Broken Ladders: The myth of meritocracy for women of colour in the workplace
Fawcett Society and Runnymede Trust ([link removed]) are delighted to share with you our ground-breaking research, Broken Ladders: The myth of meritocracy for women of colour in the workplace.

Broken Ladders centres the voices and experiences of thousands of women of colour at work and is unique because it explores the different experiences of women from different ethnic minority groups and religions.

Our research shows what women of colour across the UK already know – that experiencing racism at work is sadly, the norm. And, at every stage of the career journey, from entering work to senior leadership, women of colour are being locked out of reaching their true potential.

As well as being held back at work, our research shows that women of colour are being forced to hide or change their identities – from changing their hairstyle, what they eat or even their name, just to try to conform.

Broken Ladders shows that workplaces are failing women of colour:

➡️ 75% have experienced racism at work and 27% have suffered racial slurs.
➡️ 61% have changed themselves to fit-in, from the language they use, to the topics they talk about to their hairstyle and even their name.
➡️ 39% have stated their wellbeing has been impacted by a lack of progression.
➡️ 28% have had a manager block their progression at work.

Urgent change is needed across all institutions and sectors.

The skills, abilities, and experiences of women of colour should be harnessed and celebrated or our workplaces risk losing them – resulting in a huge loss of talent.

That’s why we are calling on Government, employers, universities, unions and businesses to take action now.
