Dear Friend,
Twelve years ago, Lucas and I met while organizing to unionize workers at a Kensington supermarket. Today, we are honored to be the next Co-Directors of New York Communities for Change.
The Golden Farm campaign is special to me. It’s where I cut my teeth as a young communications staffer, and as the daughter of a union supermarket worker, I was thrilled to be in the fight to win the rights my family had benefited from.
I also got to work with incredible organizers like Lucas—who not only helped to organize Golden Farm workers but also the broader community who sustained a boycott of the store for months during contract negotiations.
Since those days, we have both grown a lot; having had the opportunity to be a part of groundbreaking campaigns from the Fight for $15 to passing some of the strongest climate legislation in the country.
Neither of us would be the organizers we are today without the incredible mentorship of Jon Kest, Jonathan Westin, and the unyielding commitment of NYCC members who never give up the fight.
I never imagined on that rainy picket line on Church Ave that Lucas and I would be the next Co-Directors of NYCC. It is an immense privilege and I hope you will fight with us for the years ahead.
Best,
Olivia Leirer
