John, for the sake of our planet, these are the types of records we never want to see broken.
A recent satellite alert detected that more than 1,000 square kilometers of the Amazon were lost to deforestation in April – the highest figure for the month in seven years and a 74% increase from this time last year.
Last month’s record-breaking devastation is a particularly problematic indicator for the year ahead. Rainy seasons make for difficult tree harvesting conditions, and seeing such a high volume of deforestation in April could point to an even more destructive dry season only a few months away.
The Amazon rainforest is an essential resource for combating the climate crisis. Sometimes called “the Earth’s lungs,” the trees and flora serve as a “carbon sink” that captures carbon dioxide and produces oxygen. Every acre of forest lost makes combating climate change even more challenging.
We can’t sit by and watch the Amazon disappear, acre by acre. That’s why House Democrats have put forward proposals to protect the Amazon. Democratic House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer has made this one of his personal missions by introducing the AMAZON21 Act, which would authorize funds for the State Department to enter into long-term bilateral agreements with developing nations with the objective of ending deforestation and reducing carbon emissions.
This is the sort of leadership that SEEC and House Democrats bring to Congress. Together, they are ready to uplift this and other policies that can help avoid the catastrophic effects of climate change.
Climate change is happening at an unprecedented rate and, as seen in Antarctica, is even having a devastating impact on parts of the globe previously thought to be immune from an immediate impact.
John — Will you support the bold leadership SEEC members have taken for our environment by rushing a donation today? The Amazon rainforest is critical to our work to combat the effects of climate change, and with deforestation on the rise, we need to keep bold leaders who are willing to fight this fight in Congress.
