The Des Moines Register and Drake Law School are hosting a Polk County Attorney candidate debate tonight at 7 p.m.
At this debate you’ll hear two different visions for the future of the criminal and juvenile justice systems in Polk County.
My opponents' vision is essentially the continuation of the last 30 years of failed criminal justice policies in Iowa:
Policies that have resulted in Iowa detaining more Black youth per capital than any other state in the nation.
Drug case policies that have been ineffective in the face of rising overdoses and deaths.
Requesting bail for non-violent offenders, resulting in jobs lost and increasing economic instability.
Opaque plea-bargaining policy, overcharging and charge-stacking.
Then there’s our vision: where we strive to eliminate racial and income disparities, treat addiction as a public health issue and direct our resources into prosecuting serious and violent crimes.
We want to build thriving, safe, healthy communities THROUGH meaningful, criminal justice reform.
That Polk County is possible, we just need your help to get there.
Thanks, Kimberly
