Friend, Wear Orange Week is a national movement to raise awareness about gun violence in each and every one of our communities. It’s a time to build relationships with each other, to remember the beautiful lives senselessly lost, and recommit ourselves to the work of ending this crisis. The truth of gun violence in our communities is that it could take any one of us at any time, and that is how Wear Orange originated. On January 21, 2013, Hadiya Pendleton marched in President Obama’s second inaugural parade. One week later, Hadiya was shot and killed on a playground in Chicago. We wear orange for Hadiya as an annual recommitment to never forget her and never abandon the work we all now must lead. The voices of survivors matter, and when we all collectively meet and share a space and common goal, our power has meaning. We’ve worked together with activists across the Commonwealth, parents who have buried their children, healthcare providers who desperately try to save neighbors from bullet wounds during nearly every shift. We’ve worked with young people who know nothing else other than our current reality. Those experiences matter, and truly remembering the victims of this violence in our work will make our work that much stronger. Help us spread the word. Tell friends and family about Wear Orange, and get ready to share your selfie and stories of advocacy online! Adam |
