John,

Of all the news coming out of the May 17th primary, this has to be the most concerning: the GOP’s candidate for Governor, current State Senator Doug Mastriano, is not only an insurrectionist who was present on January 6th for the attack on our U.S. Capitol but was also in regular communication with President Donald Trump on the day of the attack.

As a state senator, he even sponsored legislation to totally overturn our democracy by decertifying the commonwealth’s election results and requested to have the legislature pick their own electors.

He has made no efforts to hide or backpedal his position on stripping voting rights.

John, the selection of Doug Mastriano as the GOP candidate for Governor just made it abundantly clear: Republicans want to do away with our democracy entirely. Can you donate today to help us fight back by expanding the electorate?

This election could determine the fate of democracy in the commonwealth and, by extension, the nation. The most obvious and dire threat is that Republican nominee Doug Mastriano could, as he tried to do in the state legislature, simply not allow a Democratic victory to be certified.

It doesn’t stop there — as Governor, he would have not just his own executive powers to lean on in stripping away our voting rights, but also the ability to appoint the Secretary of State, who oversees the entirety of our election process. He has already stated his intention to repeal our ability to vote-by-mail and force every registered voter in the commonwealth to re-register. And there’s no telling what else he or his Secretary of State will come up with once in power.

Our reproductive rights are also at stake: Mastriano has promised to ban abortion in all cases, with no exceptions. Even if the pregnancy is non-viable and life-threatening, such as in the case of ectopic pregnancies, his heartbeat bill would outlaw the life-saving medical procedure.

John, it’s crucial we expand the electorate in time for this election — before the far right has a chance to destroy our democracy and strip away our rights. Will you donate right now to help us register voters before it’s too late?

The New Pennsylvania Project was founded in May 2021 to expand Pennsylvania’s electorate, so it reflects the commonwealth’s demographically changing population. In the next four years, NPP will engage and empower young residents and those living in under-represented communities of color and immigrant communities. We will register them to vote, provide education about the issues that matter in their neighborhoods, and mobilize people to vote in every election.
