Hello –
We started last month with some breaking news around the Supreme Court of the United States. We celebrated the historic confirmation of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson as the first Black woman to serve on our highest court. But we started this month with some breaking news from the Supreme Court that was not an occasion to celebrate.
On May 2nd, Politico broke the news that in a leaked draft opinion from February, the Justices of the Court have voted to overturn the protections given to women across the country under Roe v. Wade. And should this decision hold, 13 states across the country already have trigger laws in place to ban safe and legal abortion access.
Abortion is a right . It's as simple as that. And for now, abortion is still legal, the right to decide still stands, but this opinion shows us that we cannot let up the fight.
It's not just health care and the right to choose on the line this election year. I am fighting to renew the expanded Child Tax Credit because 36 million families are still waiting for relief , and I will never stop fighting for voting rights and equal access to the ballot box for every single eligible voter in the country .
I can continue this fight because I know you are with me. And to all of you that shared with me the top issues you are most passionate about – Climate Change, Voting Rights, Health Care Reform, and Women's Rights – I hear you loud and clear and I am ready to keep advocating for our communities.
To start, I know many of our families, especially families with young children, are hurting right now – they can feel the effects of inflation and rising costs burden their families. That's why in the face of this critical formula shortage for our families, I worked with my House colleagues to pass a pair of bills last week, and I am proud to see the Senate pass the Access to Baby Formula Act , to allow for more formula to be purchased with money from a federal program that aids low-income women, infants, and children.
I know my fight for children and families will always go on, and I thank you again for continuing on with me.
