Hi,
Joe Manchin is once again exploiting his position as a key swing vote for
Democrats to do the bidding of the fossil fuel industry. That's been
Manchin's signature move for his entire career.^1
It's time to stop him, and make Congress pass President Biden's bold
climate agenda.
After months of stonewalling President Biden's climate and social spending
agenda, Manchin is now pretending like he's ready to come to the
bargaining table.^2 What he's trying to pass off as a compromise would in
fact be a special deal for his fossil fuel baron buddies.

Manchin has said he wants a bipartisan energy policy deal. We know what
that means: a deal that's friendly to the fossil fuel industry. Moreover,
it's unlikely that even Manchin's tepid, business-friendly climate change
package will attract much appreciation from Republicans.
In lieu of President Biden's proposal to invest billions in building
communities resilient to climate change,^3 Manchin's proposed climate deal
consists solely of tax breaks for clean energy technology companies.^2 The
climate science makes clear: that's not a serious proposal.
Why is Manchin so insistent on burning up the earth? Perhaps because he
stands to personally benefit. Painstaking reporting from the Intercept and
the New York Times make clear: Manchin's entire career can be explained
through the fates and fortunes of his gob mine, in which many larger
energy companies are stakeholders. Manchin's fate is hitched to his own
fossil fuel plant, and to the fossil fuel industry as a whole.
The Senate must sketch out the budget reconciliation package soon to give
it ample time to pass. That package must include the ambitious climate —
not a slough of Manchin's bad-faith "compromises"!
