Hello,
May is Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month. It's an opportunity to celebrate America's diversity while recognizing – and working to overcome – our nation's history of anti-AAPI legislation and anti-AAPI discrimination.
The COVID-19 pandemic worsened anti-AAPI violence, but it certainly wasn't the beginning of it. From racist so-called "Alien Land Laws," which prohibited land ownership, to the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II, Washington state has a history of anti-AAPI policies that we need to remedy.
Hate has no home in Washington state or anywhere else in this country. Now, more than ever, we must make a choice to stand against hatred and discrimination.
Last year, I was proud to co-sponsor Rep. Grace Meng's resolution to condemn the rise in anti-Asian sentiment. And I proudly co-sponsored the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act to help prevent hate crimes related to COVID-19.
It will take all of us to make a difference, so I hope you'll join in this fight. This month and beyond, will you commit to standing in solidarity with the AAPI community? Add your name next to mine. >> [link removed]
Thank you,
Derek Kilmer
