Building a mass movement is key to a socialist victory. Join the nationwide DSA recommitment campaign and help reach out to lapsed and expired members to ask them to recommit to the cause. In a moment where abortion rights are under attack and the Democratic administration is showing ineptitude and unwillingness to lead, we are experiencing a renewed popular political engagement, so now is the great time to help ask members recommit! Join one of our remaining three phone and text banking sessions to reach out to expired and lapsed members, hear what they have to say, and ask them to recommit to the DSA!

Phone banking #2 - Wednesday evening, May 25th 6:00-8:00

Text banking #1 - Monday daytime, May 30th 12:00-2:00

Phone banking #3 - Saturday afternoon, June 4th 12:00-2:00

Support families reclaiming their homes!

Tuesday, May 24 @ 9:00 am - 3:00 pm

There are more vacant apartments than houseless people in LA.

We can’t build our way out of a housing crisis. We can’t afford to wait for housing supply to trickle down — it won’t. We need to rehab and fill vacant homes *yesterday.*

In March of 2020, DSA-LA helped found a coalition called Reclaiming Our Homes: a group of people who took a stand for their families and reclaimed homes, owned by Caltrans, that had been abandoned and empty for decades. Two years later, these families are demanding to permanently stay in their homes.

Tomorrow, May 24, DSA-LA urges members to call or email the LA County Board of Supervisors to urge them to commit to the Reclaimers' demands!

How to keep your comrades safe at a rally or protest

Saturday, May 28 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

Given the recent waves of rallies and protests in response to the Roe v Wade crisis, and those that are certain to come, it's important that we invest in our marshalling capabilities as a chapter. Come join your comrades and Red Rabbits, DSA's national marshalling program, for a three hour 101 introduction to street marshalling and how to keep your comrades safe!

Marxism Reading Group – Pedagogy of the Oppressed – Part 1

Tuesday, May 24 @ 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm

Please join us for our discussion of the first chapter of Pedagogy of the Oppressed by Paulo Freire, on Tuesday, May 24th.

A favorite of socialists as well as leftists all over the world (and in DSA-LA) has been widely praised. A summary: “Pedagogy of the Oppressed develops a theory of education fitted to the needs of the disenfranchised and marginalized members of capitalist societies. Combining educational and political philosophy, the book offers an analysis of oppression and a theory of liberation. Freire believes that traditional education serves to support the dominance of the powerful within society and thereby maintain the powerful’s social, political, and economic status quo. To overcome the oppression endemic to an exploitative society, education must be remade to inspire and enable the oppressed in their struggle for liberation.”

A collaborative doc with the text we’ll be discussing, the audiobook version, and Zoom connection information will be provided. Please RSVP for access.

The discussion group is open to all, including DSA members outside of the San Fernando Valley and non-DSA members.

This reading group meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays of every month.
