– today is the day that the Title 42 expulsion order was
supposed to end, restoring access to our asylum system. Instead, late on Friday,
a federal judge blocked the Biden administration from halting Title 42
expulsions while the court case proceeds. This politically-driven decision means that tens of thousands of people will
continue to be denied their fundamental and legal right to seek asylum.
The Republican-led effort to stop the Biden administration’s decision to end
this inhumane and unconscionable policy is part of a broader pattern. In the
last year alone, we’ve seen legal challenges seeking to prevent the end of the
“Remain in Mexico” policy that has forced tens of thousands of asylum seekers to
wait out their cases in Mexico; attempts to gut the transformative DACA policy,
leaving DACA recipients in legal limbo; and now for the time being, our asylum
system remains shut down because of Stephen Miller’s Title 42 order.
Independent of what the court eventually decides, it is critical that our
elected officials do not make the situation any worse. Congress must reject the
Lankford-Sinema bill or any other piece of legislation that would indefinitely
block access to the legal right to asylum in the United States. Join us in calling on Congress to help us restore the legal right to asylum for
all.
