I formed a unit in my office to eliminate the backlog of untested rape kits — but we're not stopping there.
My office is committed to holistically improving our state's response to sexual assault. As part of that commitment, we set out to identify every registered Washington sex offender who was lawfully required to provide DNA, but never provided it, and ensure that these individuals comply with this important part of their sentence.
After months of work and coordination with local law enforcement, we completed this project. 372 new DNA profiles are now in a nationwide database, CODIS. Several of the samples connected to unsolved cases, and three new investigations have already reopened due to this information.

Next we're focusing on violent offenders in our state. Ensuring that those required to provide DNA comply with the law will solve cold cases, and could lead to the exoneration of individuals who were wrongfully convicted. We will continue working to make Washington more just, equitable, and safe for all communities.
