Dear Reader,
I want to share our newly released Impact Report, covering the first four months of 2022 at ProPublica. We produce this report three times a year to spotlight the impact of our recent investigations.
Spurring real-world change through investigative journalism is at the heart of what we do, and we track the impact of our work carefully. Over the last few months, among other reforms, our reporting has led to:
*
A $141 million settlement from the maker of TurboTax, which will pay up to $90 apiece to customers who were tricked into paying for the tax software <[link removed]> even though they were eligible to get it for free.
*
The Environmental Protection Agency’s unprecedented expansion of air monitoring in some of the country’s most polluted neighborhoods <[link removed]>.
*
The opening of a congressional investigation into the Food and Drug Administration’s handling of a mechanical heart pump with deadly problems <[link removed]> that the agency knew about for years without acting.
*
A New Mexico law that will allow child support collected by the state to go directly to the children of single mothers on welfare <[link removed]> instead of being diverted into government coffers, as it was previously.
*
Maine moving to hire its first public defenders <[link removed]>, finally joining the nation’s other 49 states by providing direct legal representation to defendants who cannot afford their own lawyer.
I encourage you to read the full report <[link removed]>. Thank you for supporting our work and for believing in our mission.
Best Wishes,
Robin Sparkman President, ProPublica
