First, I want to say happy thanksgiving!
On tuesday, Trump pardoned a Turkey. As someone who is critical
of the criminal justice system, I have to ask a few important
questions.
What was the turkey charged with? Was he ever convicted by a
jury of his peers? Did Trump see that the law which led to his
incarceration was unjust? Was he pardoned purely because he was a
turkey? Or did he have connections to trump and the Russians?
Yes, these questions are a joke, but ironically so many
parallels can be drawn between this holiday tradition and our
tragically flawed criminal justice system.
Pardoning turkeys might be great, but how about pardoning some
of the people who are incarcerated for non-violent, victimless
crimes? This has been our campaign promise for a while, but this
wasn't enough. We are now pushing the idea that non-violent
offenders of victimless crimes should not only be pardoned, they
should be completely exhonorated and their criminal records should
be expunged.
We can't change the past, but we can remove the stigma that a
victim of the government's unchecked aggression against peaceful
Americans must deal with every day. Some have been labeled as
felons, which preclude them from job opportunities, forcing them to
live as second class citizens. Then that same justice system that
created these circumstances further mock and degrade them.
It's time to put an end to this travesty and start restoring
faith in the American people, and undoing the damage
that tyrants have caused.
I've said this before and I'll say it again. No Libertarian will
ever become president until the hearts and minds of the people
align with the idea that the government should not use force and
violence to abridge the rights of the minority. This campaign is
fighting to break through the political noise with this common
sense message. We are fighting for hearts and minds.
