Schools are well-positioned to help reduce adolescents’ risk for HIV infection and other STDs through sexual health education, access to sexual health services, and safe and supportive environments. NASN has recently released a new Sexual Health Toolkit, produced with support from the CDC's Division of Adolescent and School Health. The Sexual Health Toolkit is an easily accessible source of information for schools and school nurses interested in promoting efforts to reduce HIV, other STDs, and unintended pregnancy, as well as reduce behaviors that contribute to health risks among our nation’s adolescents. The toolkit provides a range of resources from publications, webinars, fact sheets, and program implementation guides. The materials represent a compilation of existing resources and materials selected by the CDC and NASN and vetted by an advisory group of school nurses. See the toolkit. BETTER LEARNING. ™ NASN News and Highlights First Round of Funding Complete for Champions for School Health Project NASN is pleased to announce Phase 1 of The Champions for School Health project, created in partnership with the Institute for Educational Leadership and generous support from Kaiser Permanente, is complete, awarding $250,000 to increase confidence in and access to pediatric COVID-19 vaccinations. Funded projects included vaccine clinics and events, in-person outreach, and vaccine confidence surveying, including outreach to children and families in rural communities with limited access to healthcare. “The grant funding is connecting community partners and school health leadership in a powerful way,” stated Donna Mazyck, MS, RN, NCSN, CAE, FNASN, Executive Director of NASN. “Sustainable coalitions like these are essential to addressing the health inequities that impact our nation’s children.” VIEW ANNOUNCEMENT NASN School Nurse May 2022 Issue Now Available The NASN School Nurse is a peer-reviewed clinical resource journal and a subscription is included with your NASN membership. Know Your COVID-19 Community Level COVID-19 Community Levels is a tool to help communities decide what prevention steps to take based on the latest data. Levels can be low, medium, or high. Hospital beds in use, hospital admissions, and the total number of new COVID-19 cases in an area will determine community levels. School nurses can use the map of the U.S. by county to track the community level of transmission for your school(s), which is updated weekly. Managing Chronic Health Conditions Course: A School Nurse-Led Initiative to Address Chronic Absenteeism Stories from across the country indicate that school nurses decrease absenteeism and address chronic absenteeism. NASN received a CDC contract to develop a tool/process to assist school nurses in addressing chronic absenteeism in students for health reasons and help identify students with chronic undiagnosed conditions. The evidence‐based tool/process was developed based on best practices related to chronic absenteeism and management of chronic conditions in the school setting. This presentation shares the tool/process, experiences, and tips from the school nurses in four states who've piloted it. The offering will also share how the experience and data helped elevate the value of the school nurse in the school and allowed them to advocate more for students. Learn more and complete the course. The School Nurse-Led Surveillance of Chronic Absenteeism Manual guides school nurses in addressing health-related absences. The manual includes a standardized, evidence-based procedure for school nurses to follow to address health-related absences and chronic absenteeism. Grieving students need the support and care of their school communities. The Coalition to Support Grieving Students provides resources that will empower school communities across America in the ongoing support of their grieving students, staff, and families. A recently developed resource is Grief Among Students of Color. Coping with Mass Shootings, Understanding Gun Violence News reports about the shootings in communities around the country can cause stress and anxiety for everyone, leaving questions about the causes of and solutions to gun violence. The American Psychological Association offers resources to help those who are suffering distress, including Resources for parents: supporting kids through healthy communication about race, How to talk to children about difficult news, and Helping your children manage distress in the aftermath of a shooting. NASN Resources: NASN's School Emergency Triage Training (SETT) is now back to live in-person sessions. SETT provides school nurses with the knowledge, skills, and training resources to lead school-based Disaster Response Teams and perform triage in response to mass casualty incident events. National Asthma & Allergy Awareness Month Since 1984, the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America has declared May to be “National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month.” It is a peak season for people with asthma and allergies and a perfect time to educate patients, family, friends, co-workers, and others about these diseases. This year's theme is increasing confidence when using asthma and allergy medicines. Use their resources and tools to spread awareness during May and all year long!
