I’m thrilled to announce that this week, we took a major step towards ending the ongoing colonial status of Puerto Rico once and for all.

Our current policies treat the people of Puerto Rico as second-class citizens, and I know firsthand what a devastating impact that has on the Island’s communities. That’s why I’ve been working towards decolonization for my entire career, and why this spring, I reached across the aisle to come up with a permanent solution.

The agreement will provide Puerto Ricans the chance to decide between independence, sovereignty in free association, and statehood, and the results will be binding.

Puerto Ricans deserve to decide the Island's political status, and that’s what this measure will provide. I know the work doesn’t stop here, but this is a historic accomplishment, and I hope you’ll join me in taking a moment to celebrate it.
