Friend, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has been subpoenaed.
Even after leaked audio footage of Kevin McCarthy saying Donald Trump should consider resigning in the immediate aftermath of the Jan. 6 attack, McCarthy has refused to cooperate voluntarily with the bipartisan Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol.
So – in an extraordinary move – the Select Committee has issued a subpoena to compel his testimony. The message is clear: No one is above the law.
It doesn't matter that Kevin McCarthy is one of the highest-ranking lawmakers in Congress. If he has information that can help uncover the full truth about Trump's and GOP lawmakers' roles in the deadly Capitol attack, then he must testify – even if that testimony would reflect poorly on Trump, McCarthy, or any member of his party.
Sadly, McCarthy has a track record of hypocrisy when it comes to standing up to Donald Trump: In the immediate aftermath of the insurrection, McCarthy condemned Trump's behavior and privately suggested Trump should consider resigning. But then only days later, McCarthy did an aboutface and voted against impeaching the President. Ever since he has refused to provide any information that could help the Jan. 6 committee with its investigation.
Now there is speculation McCarthy could even try to ignore the Select Committee's subpoena. We must speak out against McCarthy's political cowardice, and I'm counting on you to take action right away. We simply can't let Republicans like McCarthy get away with obstructing the investigation and sweeping Trump's crimes under the rug. Will you sign my new petition to condemn GOP hypocrisy and demand that Republicans like Kevin McCarthy be held accountable for enabling Trump's crimes?
