John:
A new budget deal has been struck between House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, which will be signed by the president if it passes the House and the Senate.
It's a very bad deal that busts the 2011 budget caps by $320 billion, adds $2 trillion to the national debt over the next decade, and suspends the debt limit for the next two years. That means there will be no policy break to stop Washington's runaway spending!
Please urge your representatives to oppose any legislation that breaks the budget caps!
Not only is this budget deal bad policy, it's also bad politics because it sends the message that Republicans won't tackle Washington's spending problem.
Here's the headline from the Washington Post, which will be repeated by news outlets across the country.
"The budget deal shows how unserious the GOP is about deficits in the Trump era"
Is that the message Republicans want to send heading into the election? Apparently it is because Senator McConnell recently told the president that nobody has ever lost an election for spending too much.
Of course, that isn't true.
There have been countless Republicans who have lost primary elections for wasting taxpayer money, and it was the growing frustration with big-government Republicans refusing to listen that led to Donald Trump winning the nomination in 2016.
Also, voting to increase the debt limit is one of the most damaging things a lawmaker can do according to the polling we have done in numerous races across the country.
There's still time to stop this budget deal, but we need to take action now to make DC listen.
Tell Washington: "Don't Bust the Caps!"
Republicans can't say they want to drain the swamp if they keep feeding the alligators. Now is the time to stop the spending increases and at least freeze spending at current levels.
Thank you for being part of our team and for doing so much to help promote conservative policies in Washington.
Sincerely,
