The House and Senate were in session this week, where they considered two bills totaling nearly $100 billion in new spending. New spending that would be 100 percent funded by debt.

Happening on the Hill

Swampy $40 Billion Ukraine Funding:

• On Thursday, the Senate voted 86-11 to pass the $40 BILLION Ukraine package (see how your Senator voted here).
• In a rushed and broken process, the House was given less than six hours to review the package and the Senate was expected to take it up immediately.
• Thankfully, Senator Rand Paul insisted on debating the bill, and this gave the American people much needed time to analyze what is in this $40 billion package.
• The package includes over $7 billion to pay for the salaries of Ukrainian government employees and civil service pensions. It’s a shift from previous Ukraine bills that solely funded their self-defense military efforts.
• None of the $40 billion contains any spending offsets, meaning that the $40 billion will go straight to the national debt.

Also worth noting is the lackluster level of contribution from Europe to support Ukraine. Even before this new $40 billion bill, the United States had contributed a great deal more than the rest of the European community.

Another “COVID Bailout – this time for $48 Billion:

• After two years of blue state lockdowns, Congressional Democrats want to reward their states for failed Covid policies.
• Last week, the House passed a nearly $50 billion “Covid-related” bailout for their favored industries.
• Congressional Democrats have learned nothing from their debt-fueled spending spree, and additional bailout bills will only add fuel to the fire of inflation.
• And let’s not forget the billions of dollars worth of fraud and waste that occurred in past Covid relief bills…

• This week, the Senate took up a slightly different bill of their own, with $48 billion in handouts for restaurants, minor league sports, gymns, and live music venues.
• On Thursday morning, Heritage Action sounded the alarm, issuing a key vote to oppose the bill.
• On Thursday evening, a Republican-led filibuster stopped the bill and saved taxpayers from $48 billion in needless spending. See how your Senators voted here.

It’s National Police Week!

During this special week, we must reaffirm our support and respect for the good men and women in law enforcement—”defund the police” is a terrible policy and lawmakers and governors should reject it.

The Left’s “Defund the Police” movement has been defeated at many ballot boxes, but has succeeded in many large cities thanks to liberal DAs who refuse to lock up violent criminals. And we’ve seen the consequences with record crime waves sweeping through cities like San Francisco, Chicago, and New York.

There is a pattern: police arrest criminals and then, in the name of “bail reform,” liberal DAs let the criminals walk free.

Sadly, it’s no surprise that many of the cities are struggling to recruit enough new police officers to patrol the streets.

In 2020, the toxic “defund the police” movement provided the impetus for Heritage Action to create the Police Pledge.
