Hi John,
Across the country today, campaigners are taking action against corporate courts and calling for the UK government to exit the Energy Charter Treaty. This is a crunch time for this giant corporate court deal, as countries approach a decision point next month on leaving.

Join with them by signing the petition and joining the movement against the threat this shadowy system of secret tribunals poses for climate justice:

Action that the UK government needs to take to meet its Paris climate commitments could trigger legal claims of up to £11 billion in corporate courts. Fossil fuel projects in the pipeline need to be cancelled to have any hope of meeting climate goals, but this could lead to oil and gas companies suing. And the danger is that this will prevent or delay the necessary action being taken.

Globally the risk of claims is up to $340 billion - and UK big polluters could well be among those suing countries in the global south.

Over 70% of the UK’s risk from these claims comes from the Energy Charter Treaty. Exiting the treaty in coordination with other countries could wipe out billions of risk at one stroke. Globally, the ECT is also the biggest single source of risk.

Earlier this week, groups in Salisbury and Glasgow held protests.

In Salisbury we joined with local XR groups in a climate bandit march to the offices of Rockhopper, who are using the ECT to sue the Italian government over a ban on offshore oil drilling. In Glasgow, youth activists led a protest to the offices of one of the law firms that specialises in corporate court cases.

Along with European allies, we held an online rally, which heard from Carola Rackete from Germany, Brenda Akankunda from Tanzania, Fernando Valladares from Spain and Jeremy Corbyn from the UK. If you weren’t able to join it, do have a look at the recording ([link removed]) .

We know from leaks that countries such as Germany, the Netherlands, Poland and Spain are getting close to exiting the ECT.(1) Campaigners across Europe are stepping up the pressure in the coming weeks to push those countries and more to make the right decision. We need the UK to step up and join them.

Together we can make a difference!
