This is a longer email, friend, but it's really important that you read it.

With the Senate split 50-50 and access to abortion on the ballot, we absolutely cannot lose this seat. But last week, Rachel Maddow sounded the alarm, saying I have a difficult reelection fight ahead of me, and Mitch McConnell just announced a $9 million ad buy against me.

In a minute, I'm going to explain why the stakes of this race have never been higher. But first, I need to ask: will you chip in $5 or whatever you can towards my reelection campaign?

When my mother, who was born in 1931, married my dad, she lacked some of the most basic rights we take for granted today. States across the country had enormous restrictions on birth control – and often required a husband’s permission. When credit cards first came out, my mother couldn't get one in her own name. And she certainly wouldn’t have been guaranteed the freedom to end an unplanned pregnancy.

But that changed. Over the course of her lifetime — and mine — women have achieved their rights as full and equal citizens in our democracy.

We have sent women astronauts into space, watched them become chief executives — of businesses and cities and states—and seen them lead. We saw women blaze trails as nominees for Vice President and President, and today, finally, we have our first woman Vice President.

This progress has made a difference — not just for women but for our communities, our businesses, and our country. Inclusion brings out the best in everyone, and the inclusion of women has helped our country become the strongest, best democracy and economy in the world.

But this progress is now under attack. The 50-year precedent set by Roe v. Wade is on the verge of being overturned by the Supreme Court, calling into question the degree to which a woman’s freedom and citizenship will continue to be protected.

At stake is nothing less than a woman’s fundamental right to live as a free and equal citizen in our country.

I am the third in a line of four women named Margaret. My grandmother, Margaret Cooke Byers, was born in 1898 and turned 21 on the day that Congress passed the 19th Amendment, allowing women to vote. My mother, Peggy Byers Wood, saw women achieve the right to control their own bodies, finances, and futures with the Roe decision. I am the third Margaret, becoming the second woman in the history of America to be elected both Governor and Senator.

The question is, what kind of future will the fourth Margaret, my daughter Meg Hassan, have?

I'm sending you this email because if McConnell's vision for America goes forward, my daughter will have fewer rights than I did. That's unacceptable.

I need your support now more than ever. If we lose this seat, we will lose our Democratic Senate majority and any chance we have at protecting access to abortion. Please rush $5 or any amount you can to continue the progress we've been working on for hundreds of years.

Thank you.
