This is Police Week, a time to acknowledge fallen law enforcement officers. May is also Mental Health Awareness Month and Law Enforcement Appreciation Month. With all of that in mind, the Law Enforcement Action Partnership would like to address a very important issue: officer wellness and mental health. Policing is an incredibly stressful job, even in the best of times, and the things we witness can take a toll on our health in many ways. In 2021, death by suicide accounted for nearly 25 percent of all law enforcement deaths - a leading cause of death for police officers. This is an epidemic, and it doesn’t get better unless we talk about it. Ensuring that police get the mental health and wellness resources they need is good for officers and good for our communities.
