No words can adequately express how we’ve felt since 10 people — all of whom were Black — were killed in a racist mass shooting in Buffalo, NY. What happened in Buffalo is a direct result of the proliferation of right wing, white supremacist ideaology and is not an isolated incident.
The fight to separate white supremacy from the very fabric of our society — from our public institutions to our politics to our daily interactions — is going to take each and every one of us. That’s why the work that we do to strengthen our communities, push for transformational legislation, and lift women of color who are the heart of our economy, society, and democracy is so important. We have to organize on as many fronts as we can to help end the racist rhetoric that fuels this kind of violence and to continue building out our vision of a just and equitable society and economy.
We’re encouraging everyone to take space to process the events of the last week, and to find ways to remain hopeful and committed to this ongoing fight. And, if you are able, consider making a financial contribution to grassroots and community-based groups doing the critical work on the ground to provide care and safety in Buffalo's communities:

Care is a universal need. So it’s no surprise that by 2030, care jobs will constitute one of the fastest growing professions in the country. Those jobs can and should be good jobs — with good pay, and adequate workplace protections — and the National Domestic Workers Bill of Rights is a critical step in making that possible.
The National Domestic Workers Bill of Rights is federal legislation that includes domestic workers in common workplace laws for the first time while creating new protections and stronger ways to enforce them. NDWA is working to raise awareness for this critical piece of legislation, while moving it toward eventual passage.
NOW is the time to rally our elected leaders to get their support for this important legislation.
Call 1-844-338-5133 TODAY — it only takes a few minutes — and urge your Representative to support the National Domestic Workers Bill of Rights. We will need ALL of our voices to keep moving this bill forward! |

2021 Overview: Domestic Worker Economic Situation |
|
|
In 2020, NDWA Labs developed our La Alianza news chatbot into a groundbreaking research tool that surveys thousands of Spanish-speaking domestic workers every week, producing first-of-its-kind data for a workforce that is essential, but overlooked, in mainstream economic analysis.
Starting in 2021, we released a monthly Economic Situation report on the same day as the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Jobs report release. That data has been compiled into a report that shares an overview of our learnings. Key findings include: -
The share of jobless respondents declined gradually throughout 2021, from 34% in the first quarter to 22% in the last quarter, however, by the end of 2021, joblessness for domestic worker respondents was still more than twice the rate of joblessness before COVID.
-
Even as respondents started to find work, 7 in 10 domestic worker respondents were underemployed, wanting more work than they had.
-
Despite an increase in employment, a high share of respondents continued to face housing and food insecurity, with 44% reporting housing insecurity in the last quarter of 2021, and 74% reporting some level of food insecurity.

This year marks the 15th anniversary of the National Domestic Workers Alliance! Over the past 15 years, NDWA has built up the enduring legacy of domestic workers — the women of color and immigrant women who do the work that makes all other work possible.
To honor this legacy, we created the “We Make History” curriculum — a course for domestic workers to learn about the domestic worker movement in the US and reflect on their own leadership today.
Over the past year, 32 affiliate organizations, plus members from all 7 NDWA chapters and individual membership, have completed the “We Make History” curriculum. On Saturday, May 7th, NDWA celebrated the hundreds of participants across the country who completed the course. |

Caregivers Can’t Wait! Rally and lobby day
On May 10-12, over 100 domestic and care workers convened in Washington D.C. to rally and meet with Members of Congress and the Administration to educate the public and elected leaders on the need for both the National Domestic Workers Bill of Rights and a robust investment in home and community based services.
Our domestic worker leaders were joined by a number of Members of Congress, including Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Bill of Rights sponsors Representative Pramilla Jaypal and Senators Kristen Gillibrand and Ben Ray Luján, actor Steve Way, author Stephanie Land, and many partner organizations.
#Momibuster Mother’s Day Event We proudly joined MomsRising, the #CareCantWait coalition, and over 100 allied organizations for the first-ever #MOMibuster the Saturday before Mother’s Day. Hundreds of moms, dads, parents, leaders, and caregivers across the nation shared their care stories and educated elected leaders on the need to build the care infrastructure our nation’s families, businesses and economy need to thrive.

May Day Rally
On May 1, thousands of people — workers, families, immigrants, and youth — marched in cities around the country and the globe. In Washington, D.C., NDWA and our affiliate Dreamers Mothers in Action joined together with partners to educate the public about the urgent need for dignity not detention, TPS, immigration protections, and citizenship for immigrant communities, and fair wages, benefits, and a voice on the job for all workers.
