** Essential maintenance to Oldham Way
------------------------------------------------------------

Electricity Northwest have started work on Oldham Way before essential highways improvements can be carried out as part of our ambitious Southlink regeneration development.

Recently the council and Transport for Greater Manchester announced plans to transform the vacant plot of land – formerly Oldham Mumps Railway Station – by building in the region of 150 much needed homes on the site.

To pave the way for the development an upgrade to the existing junction at Prince Street/Oldham Way is needed, including the construction of a fourth arm with traffic signals.

Traffic management will be in place for the duration of the scheme, and could last up to 18 months.

At any point, this may include a combination of:
* Onslip closure from Emmott Way roundabout to Oldham Way, with a diversion in place.
* Reduction in traffic lanes along Oldham Way, Prince Street and Lees Road.
* Contraflow running on Oldham Way (ie closing one side of the road and running both directions of traffic on the either side of the central reserve).
* Wellington Street (closed to both vehicular and pedestrian traffic).
* Waterloo Street (closed to vehicular traffic).

At the same time the council will also be carrying out essential bridge improvement works at Waterloo Street and Wellington Street, after we secured £4.174m worth of funding.

The Southlink scheme is part of the council’s ‘Creating a Better Place’ strategy which aims to transform the town with £285m of investment, including building more than 2,000 new homes in the centre.

Don't Trash... Saddleworth and Lees

In June our staff will start tidying up streets, roads and alleyways in Saddleworth and Lees as part of the Don’t Trash Oldham campaign.

They’ll be carrying out a deep clean of the area removing all the litter, rubbish, fly-tipping and overgrown shrubbery they find - because no one wants to live in a tip.

Since we started the campaign in September our staff have cleaned up more than 172 tonnes of litter, rubbish, fly-tipping and overgrown shrubs and cleaned more than 2,500 streets and alleys.

We’ve fined 352 people for environmental crimes.

Dirty food business was operating illegally

Magistrates have ordered a food business – and its owner – to hand over more than £8,700 after they operated illegally.

Boola Halal Limited, now trading as Singlemorn UK Limited, which supplies whole and cut chickens to other food businesses, including restaurants and takeaways, was also operating from facilities that potentially put consumers at risk.

Want to learn all about waste and recycling?

Does your community group want to know what happens to your waste and recycling, and want to help recycle even more?

Recycle for Greater Manchester (R4GM) runs a series of activities that are open to resident groups, interest groups, and uniformed organisations – so why not get involved with our R4GM education team?

There are several ways to take part, you can visit us for a site tour, you can join an online session, or we can visit you.

Your group will have the chance to ask all those burning questions about recycling, reducing and reusing waste and get answers from experts.

Your group can go on a free site tour around the Materials Recovery Facility and Visitor Centre at Longley Lane, to see how Manchester's mixed recycling is separated, or visit a solar farm.
