Today is the anniversary of the 1993 National Voter Registration Act and tomorrow we will commemorate the passage of the 19th Amendment in the House. This was fundamental in giving women the right to vote almost a century earlier in 1920.
In between these two key voting rights protections, we also had the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. This act was crucial in preventing racial discrimination in voting, with the banning of literacy tests and ensuring there are no barriers for anyone to exercise ther right to vote.
But as history shows us, the need to fight for voting rights doesn't end with one bill or even amendment, it's a fight that continues on and it's one that Suzan has always fought for.
Just in this past year, Suzan has voted twice, to pass voting rights legislation in the House.
This includes the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act to preserve our right to vote by expanding voting access, including vote-by-mail, eliminating discriminatory voter roll purges, and making Election Day a federal holiday.
In a time where voter suppression efforts all across the country are rising, we need people like Suzan in Congress fighting for us. We cannot afford to have a country full of unnecessary voter ID laws, reduced access to early voting, and severely limited mail-in voting.
