Dear Friend,

Cost of living crisis is crippling our communities

I hope you and your families are well. Here's a roundup of what I've been up to in Cardiff North and Westminster these last few weeks.

This week we continued our calls for an Emergency Budget to tackle the cost of living crisis and spiralling costs that I know you are all dealing with. Unfortunately we saw the Conservatives vote against cutting your energy bills through a windfall tax on oil and gas profits and against an Emergency Budget. Labour will continue to push this issue as it’s not going away.

Inflation is at its highest in 40 years. Families in Cardiff North are choosing between heating and eating. Pensioners are being left behind. Nurses who risked their lives in the pandemic are relying on food banks to survive. And the UK Government's response? - Get better jobs!

It's clear this Government hasn't an inch of compassion or intention to support struggling families just trying to make ends meet. Cardiff North deserves better.

As we reflect on events in Westminster, we're reminded of the importance of having a strong Labour team in Cardiff North who'll stand up for our communities and against the impact of Tory decisions. I'm incredibly proud we've gained 7 new Welsh Labour councillors in the recent local elections and I know they will do their wards and communities proud.

With very best wishes,

Anna

Meet your new Cardiff North Labour Team!
I'm beyond proud that we've returned all our sitting Welsh Labour Councillors in Cardiff North and would like to welcome our 7 new Councillors. Councillors Marc Palmer, Kate Carr, Jackie Jones and Jamie Green in Whitchurch and Tongwynlais. Councillors Bethan Proctor and Garry Hunt in Llanishen and Councillor Mike Ash-Edwards in Heath and Birchgrove.

We came closer than we've ever come before in Pontprennau and Old St Mellons, Rhiwbina and Lisvane and Thornhill thanks to our fantastic candidates and activists. It's clear we've cemented a strong team across Cardiff North to build on for the next election.
Getting Stuck in with AFC Whitchurch!
It was great to get out to support AFC Whitchurch girls playing in one of their weekend matches recently and get stuck in with penalty shoot outs. AFC Whitchurch girls section has gone from strength to strength and still have places in their Huddle sessions for any budding footballers who want to give it a go! I think I'll leave the penalty shootouts to the experts though...

Lisvane Old School Redevelopment

A fantastic morning recently visiting Lisvane Old School Community Centre today - a real community hub in the heart of Lisvane! The newly redeveloped centre has recently opened and offers a number
of function and meeting rooms, a wide range of groups and activities for the community to get involved in and a community library. I’m looking forward to returning to try the new cafe and to hold my advice surgeries here again!

Cerebral Palsy Visit

I recently visited the new children’s centre, Cerebral Palsy Cymru in Llanishen. They do an incredible job supporting children living with Cerebral Palsy, empowering their families and providing early intervention courses for therapists across the world. I'm proud they're based here in Cardiff North!

Climate Campaigner wins award

I am proud my constituent Martine has been recognised by Your UK Parliament Awards for her fantastic efforts in campaigning for urgent Climate Action. Martine is a Climate Ambassador for Birchgrove WI and works her socks off to raise awareness of the climate emergency!

Funding workshop for good causes
It was great to host a free, virtual funding workshop alongside the People's Postcode Lottery recently for volunteers, charities and good causes across Cardiff North.

They make such a positive difference in our communities and I hope that this workshop was helpful in securing funding so they can continue doing so.

Conservatives Vote Against Cutting Your Energy Bills

This week, Labour forced a vote for a windfall tax on oil and gas profits to cut energy bills and help save households money. I'm ashamed that this Conservative Government voted it down. It was an opportunity for Tory MPs to make their voices heard and stand up for their constituents. They failed miserably.

After 12 years of the Conservatives, people up and down this country are working hard, paying more, but getting less. And the UK Government just turned its back on them.
Government Still Letting Victims Down

[link removed]

Six Justice Secretaries over six years have promised to deliver a Victims' Bill. Queen's Speech after Queen's Speech touts support for victims of crime and yet the Tories fail to deliver. It's clear from this year's speech where the Victims' Bill wasn't mentioned once, that this Government is still dragging its heels on giving victims the support they need to seek justice and put criminals behind bars.
Re-joining the Environmental Audit Committee

Alongside my frontbench shadow ministerial duties, I'm pleased I have been able to rejoin the Environmental Audit Committee this week. We'll be focusing on some critical areas in our journey to Net Zero, including an inquiry into net zero aviation and shipping and I look forward to getting stuck in.

Govt Voted Down Emergency Budget

Watch to the end...

This week we saw inflation rise to its highest in 40 years, up to 9%. The Government might think the cost of living crisis is a joke, but these are real people's lives. The Government had a further opportunity to curb the crisis and support struggling families through an emergency budget. They refused.

Supporting Ukrainian Families Come to Cardiff North
My office has been working tirelessly to support ten Ukrainian families and their sponsors who're helping them to resettle in Cardiff North. The hostile environment of the Home Office has made it incredibly difficult to make enquiries, but I'm pleased that 4 families have now made it safe and sound to their new homes. We'll continue to support Cardiff North sponsors in ensuring Ukrainian families reach safety.
As always, please get in touch with your feedback!
