How many people are in a New York City homeless shelter each night? It seems like a simple question, but as our reporter David Brand discovered, getting the answer is complicated. New York City has five municipal shelter systems run by four different agencies—the count reported by the Department of Homeless Services is just a partial view. So this year City Limits created a comprehensive daily shelter tracker to ensure that all those in shelter—young people, families with children, veterans, domestic violence survivors, single adults—are seen, counted, and adequately resourced.
