Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm Denies Biden Administration Culpability for High Gas Prices

Spencer Brown: On Thursday morning in a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing, Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm repeatedly refused to acknowledge that the Biden administration’s war on U.S. energy had caused gas prices to rise since the president took office and started cracking down on domestic energy production. Even after Republican Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri laid out the proof of the Biden administration’s anti-fossil fuel policies that have limited supply and driven up costs, Granholm still wouldn’t accept any responsibility for the soaring cost of gas as the national average for regular unleaded hit another all-time high on Thursday morning (Townhall). Townhall: Senator @HawleyMO just NUKED @SecGranholm for REFUSING to admit that Biden’s energy policies have increased gas prices (Twitter). RNC Research: Wondering why gas is up $2 since Biden took office (Twitter)? Fox News: The national average cost of a regular gallon of gasoline hit $4.589 early Thursday morning. This price topped Wednesday’s previous record of $4.567, which had beat Tuesday’s record of $4.523, which in turn had surpassed Monday’s record of $4.470 (Fox News).

El Paso, Texas Preparing to Declare State of Emergency as Title 42 Ends

From the story: El Paso County in Texas plans to declare a state of emergency as it prepares for a surge of immigration with the Biden administration expected to lift the Title 42 health authority allowing summary deportation of migrants. County Judge Ricardo Samaniego said Thursday morning that the declaration would be filed as soon as that day. The city council plans to vote on the declaration next week, with the measure going to the city’s mayor for final approval. The declarations would make both city and county eligible for state and federal funding needed to open additional shelters, since existing facilities are already operating near capacity (New York Post). Daily Wire: CBP Nationwide Total Encounters for the current fiscal year to date through April are already at 1,478,977. The April numbers follow a March report that nearly 210,000 illegal immigrants were encountered during the month, the largest number for any one month during the Biden presidency (Daily Wire). One month ago, Democrat Senator Mark Kelly told Fox News: “Right now, we have a crisis on our southern border. Right now, this administration does not have a plan. I warned them about this months ago. It’s going to be, to be honest, it’s going to be a crisis on top of a crisis” (Fox News).

$40 Billion Ukraine Aid Package Passes House, Senate

Wall Street Journal: The Senate passed a nearly $40 billion military and economic aid package to help Ukraine repel Russia’s invasion, sending the bill to President Biden’s desk and bringing America’s commitment to almost $54 billion. The 86-11 vote was overwhelmingly bipartisan, with all Democrats and most Republicans voting yes. The Republicans who opposed the bill cited its price tag and misgivings about long-term involvement in funding a foreign war. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) said he wished the vote was unanimous, and he worried about the message it would send to America’s enemies that it wasn’t. “While senators in both parties want this package done, it is beyond troubling to see a growing circle of Senate Republicans who oppose Ukrainian funding,” Mr. Schumer said (Wall Street Journal). Breitbart: The Ukraine aid package also passed through the House with overwhelming Democrat and Republican support, although 57 Republicans voted against the legislation (Breitbart).

New York Times: Witness testimony and videos obtained by The New York Times show how Russian paratroopers executed at least eight Ukrainian men in a Kyiv suburb on March 4, a potential war crime (New York Times). BBC: A 21-year-old Russian soldier has pleaded guilty to killing an unarmed civilian, in the first war crimes trial in Ukraine since the war started. Vadim Shishimarin admitted shooting a 62-year-old man a few days after the invasion began. He faces life in jail (BBC).

Nation’s Strictest Abortion Legislation Passes Oklahoma Legislature, Awaits Governor’s Signature

Wall Street Journal: Oklahoma’s legislature passed a near-total ban on abortion on Thursday, deputizing enforcement of the law to private citizens. If signed by the governor, the legislation would be the toughest in the nation, making Oklahoma the only state to currently ban abortion at any stage of pregnancy. The bill passed the state’s Republican-led House of Representatives by a vote of 73 to 16. It now heads to Republican Gov. Kevin Stitt, who has said he would sign any antiabortion bill that crosses his desk. The law is set to take effect immediately if he signs it. The bill allows private citizens to bring civil lawsuits for monetary damages against anyone who performs or aids an abortion. The law sets minimum damages at $10,000, plus legal costs. It provides an exception for a medical emergency or if the pregnancy is the result of rape, sexual assault or incest that has been reported to law enforcement (Wall Street Journal).

Christian School Under Fire for Upholding Christian Values

Courier Journal: A homework assignment given to several middle-schoolers at Christian Academy of Louisville encourages students to persuade an imaginary friend to reject homosexuality. And parents, members of the LGBTQ community and others aren’t pleased (Courier Journal). Albert Mohler: Christian Academy’s the largest private school system here in the Kentucky area. And it is a school that’s had a long history. We’re also looking at a school that has clear doctrinal positions on these issues, upholding marriage as exclusively the union of a man and a woman, a school that has behavioral expectations, and a school that’s very upfront about that requiring parents who bring their children and enroll them at Christian Academy to sign an acknowledgement that they understand what the school teaches and the behavioral expectations of the school. But let’s just stand back for a moment because the importance of this is not just in Louisville, it’s not just about one school or school system, not just about one homework assignment. This is about where we stand as Christians in an increasingly secular and increasingly morally progressive society. We’re looking at an effort here to try to shame a school into changing its policy. And that’s exactly what’s going on. That’s how the story broke (Albert Mohler).

Biden Makes First Presidential Visit to Asia

As North Korea may be preparing for ICBM test launch. CNN: President Joe Biden departed Thursday on an alliance-boosting visit to Asia, a belated first trip to a region that remains central to his foreign policy goals even as his focus has been drawn away. Biden’s stops in two staunch US allies — South Korea and Japan — are meant to bolster partnerships at a moment of global instability. While Biden and his team have spent much of their time and resources on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, provocations from North Korea have intensified and China continues to flex its economic and military might. As he touches down in Seoul on Friday, the region’s tensions will be palpable. North Korea appears to be preparing for an underground nuclear or intercontinental ballistic missile test around Biden’s visit. US intelligence assesses that North Korea may now be getting ready to fuel an intercontinental ballistic missile, one of the key final stages in preparing for a test launch, according to a US official (CNN). Wall Street Journal: Russia’s assault on Ukraine has also heightened concerns about China. With the U.S. focused on the war in Europe, Asian officials and security analysts said, Beijing might feel emboldened to increase military pressure on Taiwan and further extend the diplomatic, economic and other forms of coercion it has used against neighbors (Wall Street Journal).

Hispanic Approval of Biden Dips to 26 Percent

From the story: President Biden’s approval rating among Hispanic Americans has plummeted to 26%, according to a Wednesday poll from Quinnipiac University. Biden is less popular among Hispanics than any other demographic, including age and gender, the poll found. The same Quinnipiac poll conducted last year put Hispanic support for Biden at 55% (Fox News). New York Post: A Republican lean among Hispanic voters, who make up roughly 12.5% of the eligible population, could prove disastrous for Democrats in the November midterms. According to Wednesday’s poll, 48% of Hispanic registered voters said they wanted Republicans to take control of the House of Representatives, while just 34% said they wanted Democrats in power. In addition, 49% of Hispanic voters said they wanted the GOP to win the Senate, while 36% said they wanted Democrats to remain in control of the chamber (New York Post).

Governor DeSantis Cracks Down on Drug Trafficking

Fox News: Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill Thursday cracking down on drug trafficking, increasing the mandatory minimum sentence for those convicted of dealing fentanyl and making the sale of methamphetamine resulting in death a capital felony punishable by life in prison or execution (Fox News). Ron DeSantis: Gov. Ron DeSantis signs legislation to combat the flow of fentanyl from the open southern border (Twitter). ABC: The legislation adds methamphetamine to the list of specified controlled substances and if that substance causes the death of a person, prosecutors may pursue a first-degree felony murder charge. The legislation also enhances the penalties for the sale of a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of substance abuse treatment facilities (ABC).
