Implementing COVID Readiness Plan, Lowering Prescription Costs, Saving Healthcare Workers Money BILL SIGNING TOUR - DAY 3 Yesterday, I signed new laws to act on lessons learned, honor the sacrifices that all Coloradans made to protect hospital capacity, and ensure healthcare readiness for Colorado. I am proud we are making health care more accessible, affordable and reliable in Colorado, as we take bold steps to lower the cost of prescription drugs and save healthcare workers money. We are making transformational investments in our public health system to ensure healthcare readiness for any current or future public health need. COLORADO HEALTHCARE PREPAREDNESS INCREASING PPE STOCKPILES, INVESTING IN HEALTHCARE WORKFORCE In February, my Administration released "Colorado’s Next Chapter: Our Roadmap to Moving Forward" to ensure we never ask all Coloradans to make significant sacrifices in the future by being better prepared and having certainty and reliability in the face of COVID-19 or any potential future emergency. It also outlines how we plan to keep Coloradans safe and enhance our thriving economy. Today I signed legislation into law to implement these standards and ensure Colorado’s healthcare system is prepared and ready for any current or future public health needs. HB22-1352, signed into law today, will ensure the state has adequate personal protective equipment (PPE) stockpiles, including masks and gloves, in both the public and private sectors for when the national stockpile is not adequate. I signed SB22-226 today to make key investments in the healthcare workforce by developing provider wellness and support programs, creating financial aid opportunities for in-demand credential programs including Certified Nursing Assistants, and expanding nurse preceptor and clinical opportunities. I also signed HB22-1401 into law to ensure Colorado’s hospitals have staffed surge capacity in order to respond effectively to emergencies. REAL RELIEF FOR ALL COLORADANS MAKING HEALTHCARE MORE AFFORDABLE Continuing my commitment to save Coloradans money on prescription drugs, I visited Aurora to sign HB22-1370. The new law will save employers and Colorado patients money on prescription drugs and ensure Coloradans can depend on their health care coverage to support their health needs. I also signed bipartisan HB22-1283 to expand access to and affordability of behavioral health care for Colorado’s youth and families, taking bold steps to provide real relief to the youngest Coloradans seeking critical behavioral health services. EXPANDING BEHAVIORAL HEALTHCARE ACCESS I visited Tepeyac Community Health Center in Denver to sign legislation to increase access to high-quality behavioral health care. I signed the bipartisan HB22-1302, along with HB22-1325 to support whole person-care that addresses physical and behavioral health and ensures Coloradans receive the support and care they need to thrive. I also signed bipartisan legislation HB22-1281 to provide transformative support for local governments and nonprofit organizations to implement innovative, community-based programs with the goal of filling regional gaps across the continuum of care and improving behavioral health outcomes for Coloradans across the state — including children, youth and families. Next, I stopped by Fort Logan to sign HB22-1303, to expand access to inpatient and residential treatment options for Coloradans seeking behavioral health care. Under the new law, Fort Logan will add 16 inpatient beds, and 125 additional beds will be added at residential treatment sites across the state. SUPPORTING COLORADO’S HEALTHCARE WORKFORCE I am focused on saving health care workers money. Yesterday, I signed HB22-1298 into law to save healthcare workers, including nurses, nurse aids, and psychiatric technicians, money on licensure and certification fees - up to $85 per year. While in Aurora, I also signed HB22-1292 to support the oral health workforce. WHAT THE COMMUNITY IS SAYING “As an executive and a nurse who has served in many disaster management roles throughout my career, and most recently on the frontlines of COVID-19, I know firsthand how important staffing and resources are to providing high-quality, lifesaving care,” said Hollie Seeley, President & CEO of North Suburban Medical Center. “Our people are our top priority -- it is critical that we retain our workforce who have so bravely served patients during these extraordinary times. We appreciate the support of the state to make this type of investment in our people and facilities, and I am confident that we can make equitable health care changes to better our system for a healthier tomorrow.” "Family physicians celebrate the passage of these three bills because we want our healthcare system to be more affordable, more equitable, and more accessible for communities across Colorado,” said Erica Pike, Director of Policy & Government Relations at the Colorado Academy of Family Physicians (CAFP). “The passage of HB-1370 is a huge win for the 62% of Coloradans living with chronic conditions who need consistent, high-quality care to lead happy, healthy lives. They also need to be able to count on their health coverage. HB-1370 will lower out-of-pocket costs for prescription medications and improve access to care, which is why it has the support of a coalition of over 60 organizations. Thank you to the bill sponsors, Colorado legislators and Gov. Polis for supporting this commonsense legislation which will make health coverage more dependable and affordable,” said Sara Froelich, Executive Director of the Chronic Care Collaborative. FOLLOW ALONG FOR THE BILL SIGNING TOUR! May 12th began the 30-day clock for all of the bills passed this session to make their way across my desk.
