Executive Directors Message
Thanksgiving is here and I want to wish everyone the happiest of Thanksgivings. Sometimes we fail to recognize our blessings or, even worse, take them for granted. I want to assure all of our members, volunteers and those who donate to the cause how thankful we are for you and your support. The Board of Directors, staff and I are thankful for your dedication and commitment to saving the Second
Amendment. By working together, we are making a positive difference.
We are approaching Black Friday and Cyber Monday, two of the biggest shopping days of the year. Now is a great time of the year for stocking up on supplies for next year’s shooting season. Some of the bargains are incredibly good. We are already seeing previews of offerings by various companies. I would be ready as there is always a chance companies could run out of whatever you are interested in. While I had only previously looked at the new Springfield Armory Hellcat, I actually got to shoot a few rounds through one of them a few days ago. It was extremely accurate at about five yards. I only shot four rounds but they were all touching or close to it. The double stack magazine made the grip wider and the gun easy to control. I will say the magazine spring was stout so a good magazine loader would be money well spent. I saw an article on a Hellcat 10,000 round test. There were no failures. On all handguns but small ones, in particular, it is especially important to use brass cases (or better yet, nickel cases for practice and self-defense rounds). Steel cases, while often cheaper, tend to drag. The smaller or more compact systems all have less tolerance for drag and therefore steel cases reduce reliability. The Hellcat is a great concealed carry firearm. Next year, there will be a new concealed carry division in the ISRA Springfield League. The firearm must be a Springfield and have a barrel length of 3.3 inches or less. The Hellcat will most certainly qualify but so will the XD Mod 2 subcompact, the SD-S, 1911 ED, the XD-E and the great 911. There may be more models included by that time. The Springfield League requires a magazine change, a skill that is not practiced enough. The date of the first 2020 Springfield Match is June 21st. The Illinois Association of School Boards has turned down a resolution that would endorse arming teachers. Of course, the Moms Demand Action was protesting outside the meeting. So let’s get this straight. We have teachers and other school personnel willing to be trained and willing to risk their lives by putting themselves between someone bent on pure evil and school children, but the Moms don’t want that to happen. So now we have this run, hide and fight idea? Fight with what? A history book, magic marker, or how about giving the perpetrators a good bashing with some kids tuna salad sandwich – ridiculous! You are facing a person who is crazy, and maybe jacked up on hallucinogenic drugs. I suggest a .45, .40, 9mm or .38 special as the panacea. How about we change up the order a bit and go with fight, run and hide. Of course, if the fight part is successful you can forget the run and hide parts. The Gun Owners of America (GOA) reports there are Gun Sanctuary Counties in 19 states. Three more counties in Virginia became Sanctuary Counties last week. This movement just keeps marching along.
