May Updates: 2022 National Survey findings, AAPI research, & more

** Friend,
------------------------------------------------------------
With suicidal thoughts trending upward among LGBTQ young people over the last three years, our 2022 National Survey on LGBTQ Youth Mental Health ([link removed]) makes it clear that The Trevor Project’s life-saving work is more vital than it’s ever been.
Here are two important insights from the survey:
* 45% of respondents seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year, including more than half of transgender and nonbinary youth (53%) and 1 in 3 cisgender youth (33%).
* LGBTQ youth with high support from their family reported attempting suicide at less than half the rate of those with lower support.
We still don't have a full picture of the LGBTQ youth population, which means comprehensive, intersectional data on their mental health outcomes remain limited. Our annual national survey works to fill in these gaps and amplify the experiences of young LGBTQ people.

Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month
** New Trevor Research Report Illuminates Mental Health Challenges, Solutions for AAPI LGBTQ Youth
------------------------------------------------------------
Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) LGBTQ young people face unique mental health challenges and outcomes due to their intersectional identities, according to findings in a newly released report by The Trevor Project, which explores the mental health and well-being of AAPI LGBTQ youth.
This report — which is one of the first to analyze the mental health outcomes among youth who are both AAPI and LGBTQ — found that 40% of AAPI LGBTQ youth have considered suicide in the last year, and those youth who experienced racism reported significantly higher rates of attempting suicide.
While these data are stark, the report also points to solutions and promising findings: AAPI LGBTQ youth who have strong ties to their cultural and ethnic identities, who have high levels of social support, whether from family or friends, and who had access to LGBTQ-affirming spaces all reported lower rates of attempting suicide in the past year.
This research underscores the importance of providing culturally salient and responsive resources and ensuring AAPI LGBTQ youth have access to affirming spaces, schools, and communities. You can read more about these findings for AAPI LGBTQ youth as well as finding specific to six major AAPI origin groups — Pacific Islander/Native Hawaiian, Chinese, Filipino, Indian, Korean, and Vietnamese LGBTQ youth — in the full report.

** Procter & Gamble to host 3rd Annual “Can’t Cancel Pride” in Celebration and Support of the LGBTQ community
------------------------------------------------------------
On June 14, our partners at P&G and iHeartMedia will host "Can't Cancel Pride 2022 -- Proud AND Together." This year’s event will be hosted by JoJo Siwa, with featured performances by Katy Perry, Sam Smith, Lizzo, Dove Cameron, Betty Who, Kim Petras and more. “Can’t Cancel Pride'' was born in 2020 from the understanding that a global pandemic would usher greater isolation and increased mental health issues for the LGBTQ community, especially LGBTQ young people and those with intersecting marginalized identities. “Can’t Cancel Pride” seeks to celebrate virtually-together and to raise funds for organizations like Trevor that work to advance acceptance and support those young people.
