Pandemic, Ethics, and Lessons Learned Major Failures, but Signs of Hope
Hastings Center President Mildred Solomon discussed ethical issues faced during the pandemic and lessons learned in a virtual talk last week at Yale School of Medicine. “We knew what to do, but we didn’t do it,” she said, referring to the longstanding inadequate commitment to public health in the United States. But she concluded by citing “important cultural shifts toward a more compassionate, inclusive future.” Watch the talk.
Pathogenic or Benign? What to Do When Genetic Test Results Are Neither
Genetic tests are often ordered to identify genetic variants that are either pathogenic—indicating the risk or presence of an illness--or benign. But more often than not, the results detect variants of “uncertain clinical significance.” This growing problem “can complicate clinical decision-making,” states a recent article co-authored by Hastings Center senior research scholar Erik Parens. It finds a pressing need to address the problem with attention to test design, reporting, and counseling. Read more.
"The Ralph Nader of Bioethics" Remembering Sheldon Krimsky
The Hastings Center staff and community are saddened by the death of Sheldon Krimsky, a Hastings Center fellow, who warned of the risk of conflicts of interest from private companies funding and influencing academic research. A colleague called him “the Ralph Nader of bioethics.” Read more.
