Friends,

Louise and I want to wish you a very happy Thanksgiving. I’m thankful to have a day where we can slow down and spend time with each other.

As you sit around your table today, chances are you’ve got that one person who, every time he or she talks, drives everyone to reach for the beverage of their choice. You know the type of person I’m talking about. They just can’t seem to sit back and enjoy coming together as a family and have to make sure you know exactly how they feel about everything.

I don’t have a good answer for that. Sometimes I get that way about football. But what I will say is that in the Jones house, everyone always has a seat at our table. No matter how crazy they make Louise or my kids. Thanksgiving is about coming together as a family.

Think back a moment. During JFK’s presidency, America was dealing with issues just as serious and far-reaching as we are dealing with today. The long, hard-fought struggle for civil rights, the escalation of the Cold War, you name it. But in the face of all that, President Kennedy promised to put a man on the moon. He knew what having something to collectively hope for would do for our country. Here’s what he said at Thanksgiving in 1962:

We live in a world of peril and change – and in so uncertain a time we are all the more grateful for the indestructible gifts of hope and love, which sustain us in adversity and inspire us to labor unceasingly for a more perfect community within this nation and around the earth.

These are also uncertain times, friends. But they are also times of great opportunity. I have no doubt that this country can come together, and I’m grateful for every chance we have to show everyone how far we can go together.

Happy Thanksgiving,
Doug
