Dear Supporter,
It was a month like so many others: Cynthia Powell was having a
hard time making ends meet. So one night, she made a fateful decision.
She sold 35 prescription pills for $300. She wasn't an addict, she had
no priors, and she certainly was no drug trafficking kingpin. Yet
because of mandatory minimum sentences, this grandmother is now in
state prison serving a 25-year sentence.
Twenty-five years. For 35 pills. To most people, that sentence is
shocking. But what's really troubling is how common that kind of
experience is.
You can read more of Cynthia's story on our website, plus many more
about bad sentences and prison policies that are just plain wrong.

At FAMM, we've known from our earliest days that real stories about
real people can reveal truth in a way that statistics never will.
Stories connect people to the most important issues of our time.
If you have a story you'd like to share with us, please do.
